Rescue Tiny Kitten Have Been Used as A Chew Toy for a Fighting Dog With Multiple Bite Wounds & Deep
“Safe at last…this poor 1.75 lb kitten we named SMURF was found dyed in purple ink with multiple bite wounds & deep lacerations – appears to have been used as a chew toy for a larger animal / dog. He was rescued today from SJACC & transported to Nine Lives by Deb C. ( thanks Deb !) for medical care. After a full body shave, multiple baths, wound care & antibiotic treatment, this poor little 7 week old little boy is resting on his warm heating pad smile emoticon
Today SMURF was playing with his 2 new friends, feeling so much better! Thank you to everyone who has called & visited ! This little guy will undergo surgery next week to repair the large wound on his right leg/ knee but all the other wounds are healing nicely! His little friend CHERRY shown on his left, takes good care of him!
SMURF, the tiny 8 week old purple-dyed kitten sustained multiple bite wounds & lacerations before he was taken to SJ Animal Care & Control and then later to Nine Lives Foundation on Monday December 28th. For the past few days, SMURF had been showing gradual improvement until last night when he became quite depressed & withdrawn. Today after being examined by both Dr.’s Rudiger & Desai there was great concern that SMURF’s bite wounds may have caused internal damage. Xrays taken this afternoon were suggestive of peritonitis (an infection in the abdominal cavity) potentially from a lacerated intestine. Due to SMURF’s declining condition / apparent abdominal distension & discomfort, both veterinarians felt that exploratory surgery was the appropriate choice to examine his abdominal cavity in detail – thankfully after careful examination of his abdominal organs and thorough abdominal lavage, we are happy to report that no internal damage or infection was found! Following the abdominal exploratory, Dr.’s Rudiger & Desai were able to repair SMURF ‘s hind leg/knee injury to allow him to fully extend and flex his hip.
SMURF recovered well from surgery & is resting comfortably tonight…. We apologize that SMURF will be unable to accept visitors on Sunday or Monday at Nine Lives Foundation – he must remain in the clinic hospital on IV fluids & antibiotics for the several days.
